CIHI has worked with representatives from Canadian jurisdictions, in particular the Inter-Jurisdictional Patient Satisfaction Group, and other leading experts in the field to develop a standardized questionnaire that enables patients to provide feedback about the quality of care they received during their most recent stay in a Canadian acute care hospital, as well as standards and supporting documentation for those who are administering the survey: Canadian Patient Experiences Survey—Inpatient Care (CPES-IC); CPES-IC Procedure Manual; CPES-IC Data Dictionary Manual. The survey base is the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, which is already used in several provinces and in the U.S. and other countries. The survey also includes Canadian-based components that address areas not covered by the HCAHPS tool such as, Internal coordination of care and Person-centred care.
