Supporting health leaders to further the delivery of appropriate and safe virtual care

Through work on the Clinician Change Management program, a collaborative program developed by HEC and Canada Health Infoway, it became clear that there was a need to catalyze policy change surrounding the question of what constitutes an appropriate virtual visit, and what parameters/criteria guide this decision. 

To support these discussions, Healthcare Excellence Canada convened a policy lab series that brought together representatives from across the country including patients (defined as individuals with personal experience of a health issue and informal caregivers, including family and friends); primary care providers; policy and decision-makers to co-design guidance for health leaders.

The resulting report, “What we Heard: Results of a Policy Lab on the Appropriate Use of Virtual Care in a Primary Care Setting” outlines the results of the policy lab activities. The guidance in this report is designed to support health leaders in developing policies and regulations to further the delivery of appropriate and safe virtual care.
