Informational Webinar – Sparking Change in the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics (AUA)
November 20, 2024, 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. ET
Every year, more than 78,000 people in Canada aged 65 and older are newly diagnosed with dementia and often prescribed antipsychotic medications in an attempt to manage responsive behaviours. In long-term care homes, 1 in 4 residents are potentially taking inappropriate antipsychotics (CIHI, 2022) and while rates were declining, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the issue, causing rates to rise (CIHI, 2023).
There are dangers associated with antipsychotic use, including increased risk of falls and fractures, strokes, cardiovascular events and even death (CIHI, 2016). However, non-pharmacological approaches to address responsive behaviours can be used to reduce the risks associated with antipsychotic use for people with dementia.
Healthcare Excellence Canada’s (HEC) newest program, Sparking Change in the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics (AUA) Awards, builds on the success and impact of past quality improvement programs focused on the AUA Approach. It will support person-centred care in long-term care homes across the country through the appropriate use of antipsychotics and innovative, non-pharmacological approaches.
Join us on November 20 to learn how HEC can support your long-term care home through access to quality improvement tools and coaching, connecting with peers, improving person-centred care and planning for continued success and sustainability. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the program, how to register and how your team can win monetary awards.
