Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan Annual Report 2022-2023

This report highlights the work undertaken by HEC from September 2022 to September 2023 to implement our Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan.

In September 2022, we launched our Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan, which outlines the work we’re undertaking over four years to build our internal capacity and ensure HEC’s policies, processes and ways of working support truth and reconciliation. This is essential for us to continue developing our ability to help shape a future where everyone in Canada has safe and high-quality healthcare. We’re reporting on our progress through the Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan Annual Report for 2022-2023

What’s inside

We look back on the initial year of implementation of our Action Plan, during which staff, leadership and our Board were provided with ongoing opportunities for learning and self-reflection. HEC made progress on many of the 24 actions we set out to take. Here are a few highlights:

The Northern and Indigenous Health team hosted quarterly learning opportunities for staff to continue building knowledge of the historical and contemporary contexts and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis, particularly how the history of colonization has affected and continues to impact the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.

We supported specific leadership development, workforce wellness and cultural safety projects with the First Nations Health Managers Association, First Peoples Wellness Circle and Thunderbird Partnership Foundation, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada and Métis Nation – Saskatchewan.

Formal relationships established with a First Nation Elder, Inuk Elder, Métis Elder, Algonquin Knowledge Carrier, and Truth and Reconciliation Coach, who provide a diversity of perspectives in supporting program development and staff learning.

Many of the actions require ongoing attention, but this reflective process allows us to be responsive to shifting priorities and emerging issues impacting the health and wellness experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

Read the report and join us as we continue to do the work of reconciliation, guided by the leadership of First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners and advisors.
