CFHI Quality Improvement Primer: Partnering with Patients, Families and Caregivers in Co-designing Care
Patient engagement involves the active participation of patients, family members and caregivers in decision-making in direct care activities and the co-design of service improvements, research and education. This resource includes a 15-minute video that describes two core design elements for effective partnerships with patients and strategies to build engagement-capable environments.
With the best of intentions, healthcare providers typically design programs based on what they think patients need and want. However, starting from the premise of expertise by experience will support healthcare providers to recognize the value of partnering with patients, families and caregivers to improve care delivery. It will also help healthcare providers to understand the continuum of patient and public participation in care and service design at the direct care, organizational and policy levels.
